MY STORY
Dr. Holly Roehl – Turning Pain Into Performance

Dr. Holly Roehl’s story isn’t just about sports. It’s about resilience, identity, and what happens when adversity becomes your calling.
Long before she became a mental performance expert, Holly was just a kid who loved to compete. She grew up playing volleyball and basketball, driven not just by talent, but by heart. That passion carried her to collegiate basketball at North Dakota State University, competing at the NCAA Division II level.
Her freshman year was a dream. The team went all the way to the Final Four. The energy. The belief. The possibility. It felt like everything she had worked for was coming together.
And then, in a single moment, everything shifted.
During that season, Holly was tripped from behind in a game. When she landed, she dislocated her right elbow—her shooting arm. In an instant, her season changed. But more than that, her identity was shaken.
The physical pain was intense. The rehab was demanding. But what hit even harder was the silence.
There was no one talking about the mental side of injury. No one asking how she was coping emotionally. No one guiding her through the fear of not returning the same, or the doubt that creeps in when your body no longer feels like your own.
She had teammates. She had trainers. But she didn’t have a mental performance coach.
So she became one.
Holly realized that what athletes need most often isn’t just better mechanics — it’s a stronger mindset. It’s someone teaching them how to handle pressure. How to rebuild confidence. How to navigate family dynamics, burnout, and expectations. How to separate who they are from what they do.
Over the next 20+ years, Holly didn’t just study mental performance — she continued to live it. She competed in sprint triathlons, Olympic distance triathlons, Half Ironmans, and even completed Ironman Arizona, which is a 2.4 mi. swim, 112 mi. bike, and a 26.2 mi. run.
Because to her, mental strength isn’t theory. It’s practice.
Through her graduate and doctoral studies, she built the expertise to match her lived experience. Today, Dr. Holly Roehl works with
athletes, coaches, and parents to develop customized mental skills strategies that enhance performance on the field and resilience in life.
She helps athletes:
-
Overcome injury and rebuild identity
-
Develop confidence under pressure
-
Prevent burnout in high-demand environments
-
Strengthen focus and emotional control
-
Create balance between ambition and wellbeing
But her mission runs deeper.
She has seen too many youth athletes burn out before they even reach their potential. Too many parents unintentionally apply pressure
that erodes confidence. Too many talented athletes walk away because their mindset wasn’t trained alongside their body.
Dr. Holly believes mental skills training isn’t a luxury — it’s essential.
Her message is simple yet powerful: Your mess can become your message. Adversity can build advantage. And mindset is often the true difference-maker between stuck and unstoppable.
Whether she’s working with competitive athletes, speaking to parents, or guiding teams, Dr. Holly Roehl brings experience, empathy, and evidence-based strategy to every conversation.
Because she knows what it’s like to sit in that quiet space after injury. She knows what it’s like to question your path. And she knows
what it takes to rise stronger.
Dr. Holly Roehl doesn’t just help athletes perform better. She helps them become unstoppable — in sport, school and in life.
